The RAM TRX is Finally Getting Discounted
Over the past 2 years the RAM TRX has been one of the hottest trucks on the market, but we are finally seeing production catch up with demand and dealers are removing markups and instead starting to discount the car. How much of a discount can you get? Let's dive in.
Status of the TRX market
When the TRX first came out in 2021 and had a base MSRP of just over $90,000. When this truck came out, it became an instant sensation as many enthusiasts have been asking for the Hellcat engine to be added to a pickup truck. Dealers quickly took advantage of the high demand with markups. Some users on this forum reported seeing markups as high as $50K, with most being in the $10-$20k range. Now that we are going into a 3rd full year of production, the demand has significantly died down. As of this writing, there are over 1600 new RAM TRX’s available for sale, according to a popular auto search site. Over the years the MSRP of many did increase over the years, so it is common to see the TRX prices in the $100-$125K range for a new vehicle.
What kind of discount can I get on a new RAM TRX?
With the high amount of new cars on dealer lots, it is now not rare to see a dealer with multiple vehicles to choose from. With that, you can see dealers advertise prices that are up to $10,000 off MSRP on new vehicles. There are still some dealers charging small markups, but usually not over $5,000. Chances are, those can be negotiated down, and according to some car buying forums, buyers are seeing discounts of up to 10% off a new TRX.
What are the deals on a used RAM TRX?
Being that this car is only a few years old, there are not quite as many used RAM TRXs available as new ones. At the time of this writing, there are just over 900 used TRXs for sale in the US, so just over half as much inventory as new cars. Generally, if we look at a 2 year old RAM, we see depreciation of around 30% on non TRX models.
It looks like the TRX is following a similar depreciation curve, but it is starting at a higher price point. Used RAM TRX models can be found in the mid $60,000 mark for higher mileage models and in the mid $70k range if you are looking for cars with under 40,000 miles.
What will the price trend be for the RAM TRX?
It looks like depreciation will continue to eat away at the value of this car. If we look at Charger Hellcats, those prices seem to be hovering around the $40K mark, wich non Hellcat V8 models of the same year in the $15k range. This means that we can expect the TRX to maintain a strong premium over a regular Ram 1500 of the same year. Given that this is a more niche car, I think depreciation will continue to eat away at them and I would not be surprised to find TRX models for sale for under $50,000 by the end of 2024.
