Used Porsche Macan are an attractive luxury SUV option
Porsche has now been making the Macan for over 6 years, and is producing over 100,000 units per year. This means that the used car market is now flooded with cars that came off lease or even 2nd owners selling their Macans as warranties start to expire. This leads to a good opportunity for someone looking for a sportier alternative to the traditional crossover. Lets dive into the state of the used Porsche Macan market.
What is the state of the market for used Porsche Macans?
A quick search on a leading car site led me to over 3,200 used Macans actively listed for sale right now. While this is not nearly as much as its sister car, the Audi Q5 with over 8,000 listings - there is still a lot of inventory out there. Some of the early models, from 2015 and 2016 are now firmly in the $20,000 price range, with some higher mileage examples coming in under that price. Cars that are recently off lease (around 3 years old and under 45,000 miles) can be had for around $30-$35,000 depending on trim.
Porsche does have a lot of trim levels for the Macan. The values are available on the Base or āSā models. The higher trim GTS and Turbo editions do carry a 30-50% markup over the base models.
What used Porsche Macans offer the best value?
In my opinion, buying a used Macan with under 45,000 miles for around $30,000 offers great value. You are getting a luxury vehicle for the same prices as a new CRV or Mazda crossover. You will have better performance and in my opinion a more stylish car at the same price point. With the 45,000 mileage cap you are likely to have a car that was still well maintained. Also, JD power did give good reliability ratings to the Macan, and since it is based on the Audi Q5, parts can be readily available.
Is now a good time to buy a used Macan?
Looking at the price chart, Macans lose most of their value in the first few years of ownership. The 2020-2022 period actually seemed to give used Macans a bit of a price boost, which is now dissipating. I would expect the cars to continue a slow price decline, but not a major decline like after the initial few years. Looking at value for new cars, a used Macan offers a great alternative to standard crossovers.
One alternative could be looking at plug in hybrids of electric cars. They typically offer similar levels of luxury, and the federal tax break will bring some of them down to a similar price range as a used Macan.
